JEWELLERY CARE

Ohliguer has established and maintained the highest standards in design, materials and craftsmanship, creating jewellery that will be passed down from generation to generation. With some simple yet important care, you can help preserve and protect your jewellery for years to come. Dust, pollution and daily wear all conspire to cloud the brilliance of a gemstone and dull the surface of platinum and gold. Ohliguer suggests that your ring receive periodic professional maintenance.

Professional cleanings are recommended as often as every six months.

This way a qualified jeweller can check your stones are safe and secure and give the whole piece a professional clean and polish. Between professional servicing, most gold and platinum jewellery can be maintained with a non-abrasive cleaner. Ohliguer recommends the occasional use of a nonabrasive cleaner for diamond jewellery. A mild solution of six parts water to one part ammonia may be applied with a soft bristle brush. Jewellery with stones other than diamonds may need other care.

Examine your jewellery regularly to make sure settings are snug and clasps and joinings are secure. Avoid exposing gold jewellery to household bleach, which will quickly cause gold to discolour and possibly disintegrate. Some Ohliguer designs have both a highly polished and a “brush” finish. Please advise the jeweller who is servicing your jewellery to apply this finish back to the piece with a satin brush in the correct area.

Certain basic precautions should be taken with all your jewellery. However, some gemstones, as outlined in this section, require special care. Take care to protect your jewellery from impact against hard surfaces and avoid contact with abrasive surfaces. Even a diamond can chip if hit with enough force or at just the right angle. Many stones such as amethyst, emerald, kunzite, opal, pearl, peridot, tanzanite and tourmaline are very delicate and easily abraded. Enamel can also chip or scratch when struck. Gemstones can scratch other gemstones and wear away at precious metals.

Therefore, avoid stacking those rings and bracelets that would be vulnerable to such abrasion. Extreme temperatures, perfumes, cosmetics, ultrasonic cleaning and household chemicals can also damage jewellery.

Fine pearls with thick nacre layers will last for generations if cared for properly. Pearls should be kept free of perfumes, cosmetics, perspiration and dirt. You may gently wipe cultured pearls with a slightly damp cloth. Jewellery storage is important as well. At the time of purchase Ohliguer jewellery is wrapped in a protective box. Between wearings, we recommend that you place it back in its original case or another suitably lined box or pouch.

Our clients are always welcome to book a complimentary clean with Ohliguer directly.
